The recognition and enjoyment of a work of art or any object can be seen as being as much a creative act as the production of the work itself. Stephen sees himself as something of a combined beachcomber, archaeologist, collector and artist. He is part of a tradition dating back to early man who collected decorated and prized beautiful and interesting objects. His fascination with driftwood can be understood when one views the variety and characters of his exhibits. Nature and the weathering of the elements form the characters of the individual pieces. Images of ancient mariners carried across the seas, scarred, battered and twisted by the ravages of time and left discarded on the beach for the sand to bury. Images of shamanistic ritual, forgotten cultures, fallen temples, figures from the underworld, creatures from the depth of the sea, abandoned habitats all form his interesting collection.

"The hours when the mind is absorbed by beauty are the hours we live"
- Michelangelo

The driftwood featured in these sculptures was collected by Stephen on the Formby coastline, North West England. To hear Stephen talk about this coastline and its rich history there is an interview available titled Foosteps of Sandgrounders. The interview includes music written and performed by Stephen.
